One of the most rewarding parts of being a dentist is helping children fall in love with looking after their teeth, long before they ever sit in a dental chair. So it was a real joy to be invited to Aajol preschool in Mayur Colony, Kothrud to spend time with the little ones and chat about keeping their smiles healthy.
We kept things simple and fun. We talked about why we brush, how to move the brush in gentle little circles, and why teeth deserve a clean twice a day, morning and night. The children were wonderfully curious, full of questions, and happy to show off their own brushing skills. Moments like these are a lovely reminder that good habits, started early, tend to last a lifetime.
A Few Simple Tips for Parents
If you would like to carry the fun home, here are a few things that make a big difference for young children:
- Brush together, twice a day. Young children need a helping hand until about the age of seven. Make it a shared routine rather than a chore.
- Use a small amount of toothpaste. A smear for toddlers and a pea-sized amount for older children is plenty.
- Go easy on sugary snacks and drinks. It is less about one sweet treat and more about how often teeth meet sugar through the day. Water between meals is a great habit.
- Make it playful. A two-minute song, a favourite brush, or a little sticker chart can turn brushing into something children look forward to.
- Start dental visits early. A first friendly checkup around your child’s first birthday, or when the first tooth appears, helps them feel at home with the dentist.
Milk teeth matter more than many people realise. They hold space for the adult teeth, help children chew and speak clearly, and set the stage for a confident smile as they grow.
